How the Environment Affects Our Skin

How the Environment Affects Our Skin

Our skin is our body’s first barrier to the outside world. It enables us to absorb the nutrients we need, such as Vitamin D, but it can also absorb harmful particles such as pollution and UV rays. You may see and feel the effect of these environmental aggressors on your skin, especially if you live in an area where they’re harsh. Luckily, there are steps you can take to protect your skin. And we can all make a commitment to protect the environment, so that, in turn, it can protect us.

UV Rays

Time outdoors is good for us, but too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can increase your risk of skin cancer and damaged skin over time. Sun exposure accelerates the rate of collagen breakdown, which leads to wrinkles and sagging skin. It also causes areas of uneven skin tone. Wearing a sunscreen or daily moisturizer with SPF is the best way to protect against sun damage.

Especially for people living in urban areas, pollutants are becoming more and more of a skincare problem. Pollution comes from smog, aerosol sprays, gasoline fuels, dust, and smoke. Most pollution particles are miniscule, meaning they can easily penetrate through your pores.

Pollutants create free radicals, a kind of atom that damages surrounding cells. Prolonged exposure to pollutants can also damage your skin barrier and make acne more likely. Especially if you live in a polluted area, it is extremely important to cleanse your face every day.

Before bed, make sure you wash your face so your skin has a chance to recover as you sleep. Serums containing Vitamin C and antioxidants can also help to protect your skin barrier and fight off free radicals.

Hard Water

If you live in an area with hard water, you’re dealing with excess deposits of alkaline minerals on your skin. These conditions can exacerbate eczema and rosacea, and they can also lead to dryness and irritation. Unfortunately, if your tap water is hard, you can hardly avoid using it when showering and washing your face. Make sure you’re using a hydrating cleanser and a high-quality moisturizer to re-hydrate the skin and protect that all-important skin barrier.

How We Can Protect the Environment

Climate change has been linked to increased rates of skin cancer, as well as posing challenges for our complexions. While we’re working to protect our skin from the environment, we also need to protect the environment from our skincare. How can you choose products that are environmentally friendly? It’s not too difficult. Look for skincare products made with natural ingredients, rather than artificial chemicals.

Eco-friendly skin care brands will also prioritize recyclable packaging and low-impact manufacturing processes. At Laurmé, we’re committed to using ethically sourced ingredients and eco-friendly packaging. We believe that being good to the planet and being good to our bodies go hand in hand.
