Should you Skip your Moisturizer in the Summer?
It’s that time of year, and even though you may normally have the driest of skin, you find your face feeling greasy and oily from sweat. You’re thinking the last thing you need is a moisturizer, but before you jump ship, here’s a few things to understand about your skin first.
For point of clarification: dry skin lacks oil; it’s not producing all the oil it needs; dehydrated skin lacks water. We hear women say, “My skin is dry and oily,” and we get it and understand what you’re saying, but if you have oily skin and it feels dry, technically it’s dehydrated. Dry skin is a type; dehydrated is a condition.
Moisturizing helps strengthen the skin’s protective barrier. This is the outermost layer of the skin. It acts as a barrier, holding moisture in while keeping dirt, debris, and other impurities out. A healthy skin barrier is critical to nourished, hydrated and silky-soft skin.
All those fun activities in the sun can damage the skin’s barrier, depleting its natural oils, and causing water to evaporate from the skin. This lack of water causes dehydrated, sensitive skin. When the skin senses its losing hydration, it produces more oil to protect itself, and for those with oily skin, that’s the last thing you want.
So you can have dry, dehydrated skin or oily, dehydrated skin. No favorites here.
WHAT ARE THE TELLTALE SIGNS OF DEHYDRATED SKIN?
Your face feels dry and tight, it itches, and you can have flaky patches. Fine lines may be more noticeable even though your skin is oily. In addition, it’s as though no amount of moisturizing seems to help.
HYDRATING VS MOISTURIZING
Humectants draw water into the skin keeping it hydrated; emollients help seal the moisture in for healthy-looking, dewy soft and smooth skin.
All skin types need hydration (water) and oil (moisture) for healthy skin.
Humectants to look for: Aloe, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid. In fact, hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water.
Emollients to look for: Jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, and avocado.
TO HYDRATE OR MOISTURIZE?
Despite marketing to the contrary, it may very well be that your current moisturizer works year-round, especially if you have dry skin (and you spend time in air-conditioned spaces). You know your skin, but don’t be fooled by the greasy, sweaty feeling on your skin. With dry skin, you need your moisturizer to keep your skin barrier healthy and strong.
